AWHP Statement on House Ways and Means Committee Markup and Passage of Key Cancer Early Detection Legislation

Friday, June 28, 2024 (Washington, DC) — In response to the House Ways and Means Committee’s unanimous passage of the Nancy Gardner Sewell Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection (MCED) Screening Coverage Act (H.R. 2407), Alliance for Women’s Health & Prevention (AWHP) CEO Millicent Gorham issued the following statement:

“We applaud the House Ways and Means Committee for their markup and passage of the Nancy Gardner Sewell Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act. This is a critical step in expanding access to life-saving early detection cancer screenings for Medicare beneficiaries.

The emergence of multi-cancer early detection (MCED) tests reflects exciting progress in protecting against several types of cancer through a simple, non-invasive method. The Sewell Act would create a key pathway for Medicare coverage of these screenings after they receive FDA approval. We believe that the expansion of access to MCED tests will have a tremendous impact in catching cancer for many women in its earliest, most treatable stage.

We thank Representative Terri Sewell and Representative Jodey Arrington as well as Committee Chair Jason Smith for their collective efforts to ensure that older Americans have access to MCED screenings. We look forward to continuing to work toward equitable access to cancer screenings, resulting in early detection that saves the lives of countless women and girls nationwide.”
