In response to the proposed Medicaid cuts being deliberated in Congress, Alliance for Women’s Health & Prevention (AWHP) CEO Millicent Gorham issued the following statement:
“Making cuts to Medicaid—and at the scale currently proposed—would have a devastating impact on millions of women and girls’ health across the nation. Medicaid is a lifeline that provides access to essential care like prenatal health, cancer screenings and treatments for chronic conditions.
AWHP’s recent survey shows that women enrolled in Medicaid are more than twice as likely to have a primary care provider than uninsured women, and are much more likely to get preventive care services such as bloodwork, cancer screenings and osteoporosis screening.
Medicaid supports strong families, healthy pregnancies and resilient communities, particularly in rural areas where nearly a fifth of adults rely on the program. Reducing or cutting this funding will lead to rural hospital and health center closures, causing individuals and families to travel long distances to access care or forcing them to forgo care altogether.
AWHP strongly urges Congress to reject impending cuts to Medicaid funding and stand up for policies that protect women’s preventive health and wellness.”
